Inefficiency of Hydregen based Economy

A fuel cell is an electrochemical device that combines hydrogen and oxygen to produce electricity, with water and heat as its by-product.In a recent study, fuel cell expert Ulf Bossel explains that a hydrogen economy is a wasteful economy. The large amount of energy required to isolate hydrogen from natural compounds (water, natural gas, biomass), package the light gas by compression or liquefaction, transfer the energy carrier to the user, plus the energy lost when it is converted to useful electricity with fuel cells, leaves around 25% for practical use — an unacceptable value to run an economy in a sustainable future. Only niche applications like submarines and spacecraft might use hydrogen.Energy taken for producing and transporting hydrogen to its destination is 3 times the energy taken for producing and transporting electricity directly.

How To Enable / Use .htaccess / Nice permalinks in Apache Web Server on Windows

.htaccess is a web server directive file populalrly used in Apache Web Server in Linux / Unix environment. In windows environment there is a simple way to enable and use .htaccess. Additionally it allows you to create nice permalinks for software like WordPress or phpBB.

To use .htaccess you need to enable mod_rewrite. Even with that I didn’t have much success when I separately installed apache web server and php. However if you install XAMPP it is a piece of cake.

XAMPP automatically installs Apache web server, MySQL database, PHP and a lot of other goodies. It does not however come with mod_rewrite enabled. Let us assume you installed XAMPP in %XAMPP% directory. Then you should open %XAMPP%\apache\conf\httpd.conf in notepad and search for mod_rewrite.

You will find a line like:
#LoadModule rewrite_module modules/mod_rewrite.so
Remove the # from the beginning. It will now look:
LoadModule rewrite_module modules/mod_rewrite.so

Restart the Apache web server through XAMPP control panel. You are done!

Cell Phones and Cancer

Recently I was asked about an old post noting the relative radiation output of various model cell phones, and whether using a headset might mitigate the problem... if there's really a problem at all. Remember: Cell phones don't put out radiation in the nuclear sense, but they radiate electromagnetic (EMF) waves that can create heat in internal organs where none should be, and possibly influence cellular operation in other, more subtle ways. So, do cell phones cause brain tumors? I haven't looked at the issue in several months, so I figured it was a good time to revisit the topic and see if any new research is available that links (or doesn't link) cell phones and cancer

IE7 vs. Firefox

It’s been a busy couple of weeks in the browser market, with Microsoft finally “shipping” Internet Explorer 7 and Mozilla making its Firefox 2.0 final.

Of course, both browsers have been around for a long time in beta versions, but it’s good to see them finally considered ready for everyone. I’ve been using both a lot over the past couple of days, and they are nice improvements.

Internet Explorer 7 shows a bigger set of changes, but that’s to be expected, since it’s been years since IE 6 came out. The browser finally adds tabbed browsing, making it the last significant browser to do so, along with anti-phishing controls, integrated RSS reading, and an ability to much more easily manage add-ons and active X controls.

IE7 is available now at www.microsoft.com/ie and is slated to be pushed out via Windows Update next month; Firefox 2 is at www.mozilla.com.
